Edward Henry MITCHELL was born in the early part of 1897, in Islington, London/Middx, son of James Mitchell a House Painter and Ellen Mitchel (nee Faunch). One of six children although one died in infancy.


His parents were married on 20th November 1892, at Christ Church, Sommers Hill, Camden, London.


Edward was Baptised on 10th April 1898, at Holy Trinity Church, Haverstock Hill, Camden, London.


1901 Census records Edward aged 4, living with his parents, and three brothers, James (7), Joseph (6) and Charlie (9 months), at 17 Maygood Street, Islington, London/Middx.


1911 Census, Edward (Ted) aged 14, has left school and is working as an Erand Boy, living with his parents, three brothers and sister Ellen (Nell) (6), at 161 Copenhagen Street, Islington, London/Middx.


Edward enlisted in the Royal Fusiliers (City of London) Regiment) for six years, on 11th March 1914, issued with the service number 9503, and posted to the 5th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, a Training Unit. On 1st August 1914, he was posted to the 1st Battalion, Royal Fusiliers.


The family moved to South Mimms, Herts, around 1917.

Wartime Service

At the outbreak of war Edward was with the 1st Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, they were mobilized for war service arriving at Le Havre, France on 3rd/4th December 1914, seeing action on the Western Front.


On 18th January 1916, he was transferred to the 17th Company, Royal Field Artillery (Infantry) and issued with a new service number 20578.


On 20th August 1916, Edward received a Gun Shot Wound (GSW) to the head and legs, he was admitted to No.36 Casualty Clearing Station at Heilly, which was located on the South side of the Railway line, where he died of his injuries on the 24th August 1916.


He is buried in Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt–L’Abbe, France. Grave Ref: II. G. 34. 

Additional Information

His mother Ellen received a Dependents Pension of 5/5 a week and his effects of £3-01s-01d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £11-10s-00d.
