Haileybury College Cloister Wall Memorial, Hertford Heath

Born on 14 May 1893 in Sunderland son of Lt. Col. Maurice and Florence Mary (Storey) Moore of Westburn House, Sunderland. Educated at Haileybury College 1907-11, he became a solicitor in Newcastle-on-Tyne. He was unmarried.

Wartime Service

Obtained a commission on 15 Aug 1914 2nd Lieutenant 3rd Yorks and Lancs, entered France on 18 Mar 1915 and was promoted to Lieutenant on 11 Jul 1915. He was wounded in Nov 1915 in the arm and invalided home. Mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 1 Jan 1916).

He returned to France in May 1916 attached to the staff of the 2nd Army. He rejoined his battalion in Jul 1916, was promoted Captain in Sep 1916 and fought at Le Transloy and Arras and died of wounds received in action between Arras and La Bassée. He was awarded MC London Gazette 14 Nov 1916) “for conspicuous gallantry in action. He organised the attack very efficiently. Later he showed great courage and determination in advancing to a new position, consolidating the new line with great ability.”

Additional Information

Brother of Flight Lieutenant Geoffrey Moore who was killed in action on 26 Feb 1918 and is also commemorated on these memorials.
