Sidney William Moore was born in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire on 27 March 1895,  the son of John William and Grace Mary Moore and one of nine children. Sidney was baptised on 30 April 1899 at St John's Church, Cherry Hinton, Cambs, alongside siblings Wilfred, Leonard and Emma and the family address was given as 5 Marshall Road, Cherry Hinton.


On the 1901 Census the family were living at 5 Marshall Road, Cherry Hinton, Cambs where his father was working as a railway clerk. By 1911 they had moved to Vincent Villas, Bygrave, Baldock, Herts. His father was then employed as a clerk to the Great Northern Railway and Sidney was an apprentice to a coach builder. 


His parents later lived at 8 Jackson Street, Baldock, Herts.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Baldock, Herts and initially served with the Bedfordshire Regiment, under reg. no. 27030, later being transferred to the Northamptonshire Regiment.  


Sidney was killed in action on 3 May 1917 during the Battle of Arras, aged 22, but has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France. 

Additional Information

Brother to Wilfred Henry Moore, who was killed in action on 12 October 1917. 


His father received a war gratuity of £4 10s and pay owing of £7 11s 10d. A pension card exists in respect of both Sidney and Wilfred but does not indicate the amount of pension paid.
