Pre War

Herbert was the son of Lieutenant Colonel Herbert Charles Symons (formerly commanding the King's Own Yorkshire LI) and Ada Clara (Brooklands, from Newport Pagnell, Bucks), she was the daughter of Frederic Wells of Oaklands, Chelmsford. Herbery (junior) was born in Fulford, Yorkshire on 17th November 1884. he was educated at St Albans School and Uppingham.


He was gazettes 2nd Lieutenant to his father's old regiment on 13th January 1904, joining at Aldershot 15th February. He gained promotion to of Lieutenant 4th September 1906. He became part of the West African Frontier Force from 29th March 1911 to 4th March 1914 and then was attached to the Somaliland Camel Constabulary.

Wartime Service

He was promoted to Captain on 9th September 1914 and was killed in action on 19th November 1914 at Shimber Berris, Somaliland, while serving with the Camel Corps.


He was buried at Little Bohotleh.

Additional Information

He had a the Royal Humane Society's Testimonial for saving the life of a comrade in South Africa,
