Pre War
Wilfred Leslie Mosley was born in Basford, Nottinghamshire in 1890, the son of Samuel and Rose. He was one of six children, although one died in infancy.
On the 1891 Census the family were living at 99 Gawthorne Street, Basford, Notts and his father was working as a machine lace curtain designer. They had moved to 12 Newton Street, Beeston, Notts by 1901 and in 1911 they were living at 234 Haydn Road, Sherwood, Notts. His father continued to design lace curtains and Wilfred, then aged 20, was a lithographic designer.
He married Dorothy Mary Alice Steward in Beeston, Notts on 21 July 1914 when his occupation was recorded as Artist and his address was 69 Gladstone Road, Watford. The following year their daughter Dorothy was born, followed by son Donald in 1917.
At the time of enlistment he was said to be living in Bushey, Herts.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Watford, Herts and initially served as a Private 52144 with the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment, later transferring to the 8th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment.
Wilfred was killed in action in Belgium on 5 April 1918. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Additional Information
His widow Dorothy received a war gratuity of £8 and pay owing of £11 10s 10d. She was then living at 51 Gladstone Street, Beeston, Notts. She also received a pension, initially of £1 5s 5d a week, later increased to £1 16s 8d and increased again to £2 2s 4d with effect from 4 November 1918.
