Pre War

John Robert Mulley was born in 1881in March, Cambs, to Charles Culledge Mulley, labourer, and Susan Jane (nee Savage).


On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Charles H (born 1877), John, Anne (born 1885) and Samuel A (born 1888) were living at the Causeway, March.


His father died in 1895.


On the 1901 Census his widowed mother with Charles and Samuel was living at The Avenue, March.


John was enlisted in the Suffolk Regiment as 5294 in the 2nd Battalion. His service number had been issued sometime between Jan 1893 (4966) and Jun 1896 (6889) but as no service record was found for him this could not be confirmed. 2nd Battalion of Suffolk Regiment were serving in India around the late 1890 early 1900s.


On the 1911 Census John , brewer’s drayman, was living with wife Ruth and daughter Norah at the Causeway, March.

Wartime Service

On the outbreak of the Great War John was recalled to his old Battalion,. As part of 14 Brigade 5 Division the Battalion landed at Le Havre on 17 Aug 1914. (it is not known when John joined them).


The Battalion formed a part of the rear guard at the Battle of Le Cateau (26 Aug 1914) where despite being surrounded by German Troops refused to surrender and suffered 720 Casualties. The  Battalion was transferred to 8th Brigade, 3 Division on 25 Oct 1914 and took part in Winter Operations in the Area of Ypres. John was killed in action on 19 Mar 1915. John held the rank of Lance Serjeant, (paid as Corporal, duties as Sergeant) in "D" Company.

Additional Information

War Gratuity £6 and arrears of £11 11s 9d was paid to his widow who also received a pension of £1 for Herself and child.
