Ernest John was born on 22 Oct 1886 in Elstree to William Robert Naylor, a coachman, and Charlotte Sarah (nee Andrews). On the 1901 Census the family were living at the High Street Elstree, Ernest was working as a gardener’s boy while his mother Charlotte is listed as a coffee house keeper. On the 1911 Census Ernest was working as a house painter and the family lived at Neva Villa, Summer Grove, Elstree. He married Priscilla L Chesher in 1913 and there was a daughter Joan Mons born 1915.

Wartime Service

Ernst was enlisted in the Suffolk Regiment as Private 28392 and later transferred to 1st Battalion Essex Regiment as Private 34950. This may have been around Mar 1916 on the deployment to France of the 29 Division (including 1st Essex) from Gallipoli and Egypt). The Essex took part in the Battles of the Somme in 1916 and also the Arras Offensive in early 1917 but were then switched to the Ypres Front to participate in the Battles of Paschendaele. Ernest was killed in action during the Battle of Langemarck on 16 Aug 1917. His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Ypres.
