Albert George Negus was born in Arkesden, Essex, in 1883, son of John Negus a, Horse keeper on a Farm and Martha (List) Negus. One of eight children although one died in infancy.
1891 Census records Albert aged 7, at school, living with his parents, two sisters and two brothers at, 17 Sticklings Green, Clavering, Essex.
1901 Census records Albert aged 17, working at a Garden Nursery, living with his parents, three brothers and three sisters at, 63 College Road, Cheshunt, Herts.
1911 Census, Albert (28) is single, working as a Nurseryman, living with his parents, two brothers and two sisters at, 1 Rounton Road, Waltham Abbey, Essex.
Wartime Service
Albert enlisted at Bedford, Beds, posted to the 16th (Public Schools) Battalion, Duke of Cambridges Own (Middlesex Regiment), with the service number 6665.
In August 1915 the Battalion moved to Perham Down Camp, Hampshire for final trench warfare training. They landed at Boulogne, France on 17th November 1915. Seeing action at the Battle of the Somme (Battle of the Somme 1st July – 18th November 1916).
Albert died on 22nd December 1916, aged 33, of wounds received in action. He is buried in the Picquigny Communal Cemetery, Somme, France.
Additional Information
His effects of £2-15-1, pay owing and his war gratuity of £3, went to his father John Negus.
His Headstone inscription “FROM BROKEN HEARTED MOTHER AND FATHER R.I.P.” was requested by his mother, Martha Negus of 85 Eleanor Road, Waltham Cross, Herts.
His younger brother, 27372 Private Frank J. Negus of the 1st Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment was Killed in Action on 29th October 191
