Pre War

Cecil Harold Newman was born on 25 March 1896 in Hornsey, London, the son of Richard and Eleanor Newman, and baptised on 24 May 1896 at St Paul, St Pancras, London.


The family were living at 14 Topsfield Road, Crouch End. On the 1901 Census they had moved to 13 Palace Road, Hornsey where his father was working as a Barrister's Clerk and by 1911 the family were living at 23 Harold Road, Hornsey but Cecil was not  listed with them.

Wartime Service

He enlisted into the Army Cyclist Corps, as Sergeant Reg. No.  7465, and served in France from 3 December 1915. He was commissioned on 27 October 1916 and transferred to the Royal West Surrey Regt as 2nd Lieutenant.


He was killed in action on 12 May 1917 during the Battle of Arras. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.

His father received a war gratuity of £6 10s and pay owing of £44 2s 6d.
