Pre War

Third son of Francis and Sarah Elizabeth Emily Newman (nee Stock), of Moor Hall Thorley, Bishop's Stortford and he was born there on 18th July 1885.

Educated at Bishop's Stortford College. Before joining the Army, he assisted his father on their farm.

He enlisted in the Essex Yeomanry, serving for six years between 1906 and 1912 and then went first to Singapore and the Australia where he was in farming. He returned to England in July 1914, perhaps anticipating war.

Wartime Service

Immediately on the outbreak of the War he re-joined his old Regiment and volunteering for overseas service, went out to France on 28th November 1914.

He was killed in action at Ypres on May 13th 1915. Captain R. G. Proby commanding "C" Squadron wrote of him as follows: "The regt. was sent up to reinforce the infantry at this part of the line about a week ago. On the 13th the Germans succeeded in taking a bit of out line and the regt., together with two other regts. of our Brigade, was ordered to retake it. They had advanced 500 yards of open ground, most of it was under a very heavy fire from shells, rifle, and machine gun fire. Your son reached the enemy's trench safely, and helped to recapture them, but a few minutes later he was shot while standing near Mr Holt who was also wounded. His death is a great blow to us all, officers and men alike, and he leaves a place in the Squadron, which it will be difficult to fill. Everybody agreed that he was one of the very best N. C. O s in the regt. and his troop would do anything for him."

Trooper H J Tucker write to his own father wrote: "Will you break the news on my behalf, that two comrades, Sergt.  Stanley Newman and Corp, Frank Bird have both been killed in action during the great charge, which took place two days ago. When there was a roll call the whole regt. had 168 casualties - killed, wounded and missing; amongst them our Colonel and many officers."
