Pre War

William Henry Derrick was born in Leytonstone, Essex on 17 March 1890, but registered as James William Henry Derrick, the son of James William and Elizabeth Derrick. He was baptised on 25 April 1890 at St Lukes Church, Victoria Docks, Essex. On the 1911 Census he was a boarder at 9 Waterloo Road, Upton Park, and working as a pastry cook assistant. He married Mary  Durham in West Ham in late 1913 and they had a daughter Harriet Tracey Hilda born on 1 June 1916.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Canning Town, Essex and served in the Royal Field Artillery, 41st Heavy Trench Mortar Battery. He was killed in action near Ypres.

Additional Information

His widow Mary A E Derrick received a war gratuity of £7 10s and pay owing of £5 17s 6d. She also received a pension of 18s 9d a week from 18 February 1918 for herself and her daughter.
