Son of Samuel and Mother Martha Nicholson, born circa 1879.


In the 1881 Census George was listed as 18 months and living with his parents at South Cliffs, Christchurch, Bournemouth. His father was a lodging house keeper.  There were also five domestic servants living at the address.


By 1891 the family was living at the Old Vicarage (?) Conservative Club in the civil parish of All Saints, Hertford.  Samuel was now a club steward. Then in 1901 Samuel and Martha and a younger son are now living at the Salisbury Arms Temperance Hotel, Hatfield, Herts., along with three servants and a boarder. Samuel is listed as the Temperance Hotel keeper. 


By 1905 George must have been in South Africa as attested in the Cape Mounted Police, 21st Sept 1905.


In 1911 his parents were at living at 5 Port Vale Terrace, Hertford with one boarder. Samuel listed as a retired hotel keeper. George was in South Africa.

Wartime Service

After enlistment, George joined the South African Mounted Rifles as No 2004, late rifleman G.E. Nicholson.


He died at 1.45pm on 24th April 1918, from a short illness at Obobogorop, South Africa. 


His father, Samuel Nicholson, living at the Great Northern Hotel, Hatfield, Herts., was informed of his death.
