Son of Cecil Arthur NOKES of Watford, and the late Helen Eliza (nee JOHNSON) NOKES.
His parents married 1 October 1896 at St Augustine’s, Highbury, London. Helen died 11 June 1903 in Stamford Hill, Middx, aged 40; Cecil died 2 September 1952 in Camborne, Cornwall, aged 87.
Cecil was born 23 October 1897 in either Stoke Newington, South Hornsey or Highbury, London, and baptised 4 November 1907 at St John the Evangelist, Finsbury Park, London.
On the 1901 Census, aged 3 he lived in Stoke Newington, with his parents and one sibling. On the 1911 Census, aged 13 he was a pupil in London Colney, Herts.
Wartime Service
He was enrolled as an Assistant Clerk 15 January 1915, and his next-of-kin was his father. He was appointed to H.M.S. Russell 29 March 1915, and promoted to Clerk 13 March 1916.
He was entitled to the Victory, British War and Star medals, and was killed when Russell struck two mines laid by the German submarine U-73 off Malta. A total of 27 Officers and 98 ratings were lost.
