Pre War

Bernard George Norton was born in Deptford, Kent, on 29th May 1888, son of The Reverend George Norton a Congregational Minister and Clara Ellen (Dewey) Norton. The eldest of two sons.


He was Baptised at the Greenwich Road Congregational Church, Greenwich, Kent, on 16th September 1888.


1891 Census records Bernard aged 2, living with his parents at, 14 Cliff Terrace, St. Paul, Deptford, Kent. His Aunt Frances Dewey was staying with the family, and they had a live-in General Domestic Servant.


1901 Census, Bernard aged 12, living with his parents, and brother Clifford (9) at, 38 Albert Street, Rugby, Warwickshire. The family had a live-in Domestic Servant.


1911 Census, Bernard (22) is recorded as single, his occupation is an architect, and he is a boarder with Thomas and Anna Hamblen at, 57 Grove Street, Leamington Spa, Warwickshire.

Wartime Service

Bernard enlisted in the Royal Engineers, issued with the service number 91714.


Not a lot is known about his Military Service other than he served with the 213rd Army Troop Company, Royal Engineers, with the rank of Lanc Corporal.


He died on 11th February 1919, at, Strathlea, Waltham Cross, Herts. He was buried on 14th February 1919 at the Cheshunt Burial Ground, Cheshunt, Herts.

Additional Information

His effects of £10-8-3 pay owing and his war gratuity of £18, went to his Executors, his father Rev. George Norton and John Lawrence.
