Pre War

Son of William George and Alice Martha or Martha Alice (nee WIGLEY) OATLEY of Watford.

His parents married 8 June 1894 at St Paul’s, Woodford, Essex.  William died 1940 in the St Alban’s, Herts, district aged 72; Martha died 21 January 1945 in St Alban’s aged 77.

Arthur was born 1898 in Isleworth, Middx, and appointed Assistant Postman Watford August 1914.

On the 1901 Census, aged 3 he lived in Isleworth, with his parents and no siblings.  On the 1911 Census, at school aged 13 he lived in Watford, with his parents and no siblings.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Watford, and was formerly Private 28048 Middlesex Regiment.  

He was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and was killed in action.  

Additional Information

There is a brief article about and a Death announcement for Arthur in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 1 September 1917; plus In Memoriams in the issues dated 3 August 1918 and 2 August 1919. Unfortunately, Arthur’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
