Haileybury College Cloister Wall Memorial, Hertford Heath

Born on 4 Aug 1888 in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk son of Rev. Richard Standly and Dorothea Susanna (Pettiward) Dewing. Educated at Haileybury College 1901-06 and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. Obtained his commission 2nd Lieutenant R.E. on 23 Jul 1909 He married Ruby Edith Boulderson in Jan 1913 in Portsmouth and had one daughter.

Wartime Service

He entered France in 1915. Promoted to Captain, he was wounded twice and was awarded DSO on 25 Aug 1916. “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when preparing for the offensive and later when consolidating positions won. Though wounded early one morning he stuck to his post all day, and drove off an enemy counter-attack with great determination." In Jul 1917 was made C.O. 8th Berkshire Regiment and was killed in action while leading his men in an attack.
