Haileybury College Cloister Wall Memorial, Hertford Heath

Pre War

Born on 6 Jun 1865 in Dhaka, Bengal, India (now Bangladesh). Educated at Haileybury College 1878-82. He married Ethel Emma Gordon, of Crescent Lodge, Queen's Crescent, Southsea, Portsmouth in 1893. Gazetted Lieutenant on 9 May 1885 to the Connaught Rangers, Captain on 21 Dec 1892 and Major 21 Dec 1904. Served on the Ruby Mines Expedition, Upper Burma and in South Africa in 1900.

Wartime Service

Entered France with the British Expeditionary Force on 14 Aug 1914 and was captured at Le Grand-Fayt on 10 Sep 1914 while covering the Retreat. He died of wounds while a POW in Hilplatz, Magdeburg, Germany one year later.

Additional Information

Father of Captain Alexander Ralph Abercrombie DSO MC who died of wounds on 31 Dec 1918 and is also commemorated on these memorials.
