Charles was born in 1889, in Essendon, Herts. Son of Hammond Charles and Fanny Pallett. He was Baptised on the 30th June 1889, in Essendon, Herts. The 1891 census shows Charles living with his Parents, 3 Brothers and 3 Sisters in Essendon, Herts. and the 1901 census shows Charles age 11 years living with his Widower Father, 2 Brothers and Sister at Stony Yard, Essendon, Herts. Charles enlisted in March 1905 into the 4th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment with the service number 5295. After training he joined the Northumberland Fusiliers on the 14th June 1905, he was found to have lied about his age and was discharged. He is recorded as being a member of the 1st Herts Volunteer Battalion in 1906. and then, in October 1906, he successfully enlisted into the 4th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. With the service number 5512. In 1911 Charles was serving with the Bedfordshire Regiment in Bermuda and Jamaica. The 1911 census confirms Charles in the Military stationed in Bermuda / Jamaica, a Private with the Bedfordshire Regiment. His age is given as 23 years. (He still has not given his true age).

Wartime Service

On the outbreak of War Charles was still in the Military with the 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, with the service number 8687. He disembarked with his Regiment at Le Havre, France, on the 16th August 1914. He was wounded during the Retreat from Mons in August 1914 and taken prisoner. He died on the 17th November 1916, in a German Hospital/POW Camp of Tubercular Meningitis. He is buried at the CWGC Cemetery, at Niederzwenren, Germany.
