Henry George Parker was born in Codicote in 1879, the second son of Henry and Annie Parker, and baptised on 25 May 1879 at St Giles, Codicote.


On the 1881 Census the family were living in the High Street at Codicote, where his father was working as a Bricklayer. They remained in High Street, Codicote in 1891 and 1901 at which time Henry (then named as Harry) was working as a Baker/Breadmaker.


He married Georgina Thompson at St Paul's Church, Peterborough on 24 October 1908, when his occupation was given as Gardener and his address as High Street, Codicote. On the 1911 Census he was living with his wife at High Street, Codicote and working as a Foreman Baker (at Messrs F W Porter & Son where he worked for many years). They had a son, George Percival on 2 March 1914 (born in Hexham, Northumberland).


Prior to joining up he was living at Corbridge on Tyne, Northumberland.


His parents later lived at Myrtle Cottages, High Street, Codicote.

Wartime Service

Henry enlisted in January 1917 when he enlisted at Hexham and joined the Grenadier Guards. After basic training he was sent to France on 4 September 1917.


An article published in the Hertfordshire Express of 3rd of November 1917 reported that Henry's wife had received official notification of his death.


He died of wounds on 10 October 1917 aged 38 and is buried at Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium. 

Additional Information

His widow received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £3 7s 9d. She also received a pension for herself and her son initially of 18s 9d, rising to £1 10s a week in May 1918.
