Pre War

Cyril was born the eldest son, in 1896 in Barnet to Frank Herbert Tasker and Amy (nee Bowtell). On the 1901 Census the family of Father, Mother, brother Harold Francis and sister Dorothy Amy were living at Melbourne Villa, Brookhill Road, Barnet. Cyril’s Father was a hotel manager.


On the 1911 Census the family were now living at the Cabin, Hadley Wood. Cyril was assisting his father and mother in the catering business.

Wartime Service

Cyril was 18 years and 8 months when he attested at Wembley on 13 Nov 1914.


He was initially posted as Private MMS/133 to Motor Machine Gun Section, Royal Horse and Royal Field Artillery. On 19 Dec 1914 Cyril transferred to Army Service Corps (MT) as M2/031435 at Grove Park (M2 prefix indicates qualified MT driver). He was posted to France on 6 Jan 1915 to join 7th Motor Ambulance Convoy ASC. Cyril was admitted to medical services at the convoy on 17 Jan 1915, transferred to 10 General Hospital, Rouen on 20 Jan 1915. Cyril died there on 27 Jan 1915 from Cerebral Spinal Meningitis.

Additional Information

His father, F H Tasker Esq, 10, Cockfosters Rd., Hadley Wood, Middlesex, ordered his headstone inscription: "WHO STANDS IF FREEDOM FALL WHO DIES IF ENGLAND LIVE". War Gratuity of £3 and arrears 0f £2 17s paid to father at The Cabin, 1 Cockfosters Road, Hadley Wood
