Pre War

Archibald Christopher Allwood born in 1890 in Luton to Walter Leonard Allwood, warehouseman(straw hats), and Florence Ruth (nee Cockayne, straw hat finisher).

On the 1901 Census Archibald was recorded as living with his grandmother Mary L Cockayne (born 1843), Sarah Louisa Cockayne (born 1870), and Lucy Moon (step mother in law to Mary L) at 94, Collingdon Street, Luton. Archibald’s parents Walter and Florence were living at 96, Collingdon Street, Luton.

On the 1911 Census the family of parents, Archibald, Nellie Grace (born 1905), Marrianna and Sarah Louisa Cockayne were living at 214, Dunstable Road, Luton.

His parents later lived at 102, Baldock Rd., Letchworth, Herts. 

Wartime Service

Achibald was called for service as he attained his eighteenth birthday and was posted to the Training Reserve as Private 13/571654. He was posted into 13th (Service) Battalion, Rifle Brigade (Prince Consort’s Own) as Rifleman 41386, no Service Record was found for him so dates for his deployment cannot be confirmed. He probably went to France in early 1918 to join the 13th Battalion in the field. In 1918 the 13th Battalion were part of 111th Brigade, 37 Division and were involved in the First Battles of the Somme (German Spring Offensive) at the Battle of Ancre  (5 Apr 1918). Archibald was killed in action on 2 Jun 1918, possibly during a period of trench duty when no major engagement was in force. 

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £3 4s 2d was paid to his father.
