Pre War

Allan was born on 19th Nov 1883 in Batley. Yorks to Frederick James Tattersfield, a Blanket Merchant, and Frances Mary (nee Walker). His Grandfather, Jeremiah Tattersfield, had been a well known Blanket Manufacturer, employing 280 men, women and boys at Bower Lane, Kilpin Hill, Heckmondwike.


On the 1891 Census the family were living at Occupation Lane, Batley. On the 1901 Census Allan was listed as a Woolen Merchant Assistant and the family was living at the Hollins, Kilpin Hill, Heckmondwike. On the 1911 Census was listed as a Cloth Merchant. Allan''s parents lived at "Springfield," Maple Rd., Harpenden, Allan’s father died in 1912 aged 63. His mother later moved to Framlingham, Suffolk. Allan was the fourth son of 5 brothers and 2 sisters.

Wartime Service

Allan attested on 18 Jan 1916 at Liversedge, Yorks and was placed on Army Reserve until 9 Jun 1916 when he was mobilised as Gunner 95023 Royal Garrison Artillery and posted to No. 4 Depot at Ripon.


He was promoted to Acting Bombardier on 19 Oct 1916 and on 23 Jan 1917 he was posted to Heavy Artillery Training Centre at Winchester. He followed this being posted to 3rd Reserve Battery on 17 Mar 1917 regaining his rank on 25 May 1917 as he went to France that day.


He joined 1st Essex Heavy Battery RGA on 11 July 1917. He was killed in action on 21 Nov 1917.

Additional Information

His mother, Mrs. F.M. Tattersfield, of "Springfield," Maple Rd., Harpenden, Herts., ordered his headstone inscription: "TO HIM THE SACRIFICE TO US THE DEAR MEMORY". War Gratuity £6 and arrears of £10 12 s 3d paid to his mother. His older brother Frederick was a laboratory assistant at Rothamstead and served with Friends Ambulance Unit, B.E.F., France.
