Gilbert Stratton Amos was born in York, Yorkshire in 1895 the son of  Major Herbert Gilbert McLachlan Amos DSO and Kate Isabella (nee Stratton) Amos.


Baptised on the 15th October 1895 in the Parish of Fulford, Yorkshire.  He was the son of Major Amos (DSO) who has served in the King's Own Scottish Borderers.  Believed recorded as of St Ippolytts, near Hitchin.


Gilbert was educated at Winchester Collage (recorded in another source as Wellington College), Crowthorn, Berkshire. (1909 – 1912).


The 1911 Census records Gilbert aged 15 as a boarder at Winchester Collage.


From Winchester Collage, Gilbert went to the Royal Military Collage, Sandhurst.


The London Gazette of the 24th February 1914, “Gentleman Cadet Gilbert Stratton Amos from The Royal Military Collage, Sandhurst, to be 2nd Lieutenant to the Kings Own Scottish Borderer’s 25th February 1914”. 

Wartime Service

At the outbreak of war Gilbert was serving with his Regiment the Kings Own Scottish Borderer’s as a 2nd Lieutenant, stationed in Dublin, Ireland.


The Battalion was mobilised for war and disembarked at Le Havre, France on the 15th August 1914.


Gilbert was Killed in Action at the Battle of the Aisne (12th – 15th September 1914) on the 14th September 1914. He is buried in the Vauxbuin French National Cemetery, Aisne, France.

Additional Information

Gilberts father Major Herbert Amos was awarded a DSO during his service in the South African, Boar War. He re-joins his Regiment on the outbreak of WW 1. He was invalided out of the army in 1917.
The Wall tablet on the North Wall of the Chancel in the Church of St. Ippollitts, reads, “In loving memory of Gilbert Stratton Amos, 2nd Lieutenant Kings Own Scottish Borderers only Son of Major Amos DSO late Kings Own Scottish Borderers & of St Ibbs. Who was Killed in Action at the Battle of the Aisne on September 14th, 1914, in his 19th year”. “Who Dies if England Lives”.
