Pre War

Charles George Amps was born in 1883 in Buckworth, Huntingdon to William and Emma Amps.


In 1891 the family were living in Church Street, Stilton where his father was an agricultural labourer but had moved to Yaxley by 1901. In 1911 he was boarding at Tewin Water, Tewin, Welwyn where he was working as a Groom on the estate.


He married Isabella McDonald in Barnet in 1914 and they had a son, William Alexander born on 13 January 1915. She later lived at Halston Cottage, 14 North Road, South Park, Reigate, Surrey.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Hitchin and served with the Buffs (East Kent) Regiment.  He died of wounds sustained in the trenches from enemy bombardment.

Additional Information

His widow received a war gratuity of £4 10s and back pay owing of £3 10s. She also received a pension of 18s 9d a week from 25 February 1918.
