Arthur Ephraim Poulter, was born in Baldock, Herts in 1892, the son of [Ernest] John and Emily Poulter (nee Goddard), and was baptised in Baldock on 6 November 1892. He was one of twelve children, although three died in infancy.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at Hitchin Street, Baldock, where his father was working as a groom, although Arthur was listed as an 8 year old visitor at the house next door with Martha Payne and her son George. By 1911 he had moved to Luton and was listed as the nephew to widow Jane Careless living at 127 Hitchin Road, Luton, Beds and working as straw hat packer.
His father died on 5 September 1915 and is buried in St Mary's Churchyard, Baldock.
He married Lily Bass in 1915 and they had a child Doris May on 21 January 1916. Their address on pension records was given as 55 High Street, Baldock, Herts.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Hertford and joined the Hertfordshire Regiment, initially with the reg. no. 5856, later re-numbered to 266954.
He was killed in action in Belgium on 3 November 1917 during the Battle of Ypres. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Additional Information
His widow received a war gratuity of £9 and pay owing of £3 10s 7d. She also received a pension of £1 0s 5d a week.
Brother to George Benjamin Poulter who served with the Bedfordshire Regiment and was killed in action on 15 September 1916. He is named on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
N.B. Surname is recorded as Paulter on CWGC but the majority of other official records give the surname spelt with an 'o' i.e. Poulter.
