Pre War

Francis William Payne was born in Bishop's Stortford in 1892 to Francis Williams and Sarah Payne and baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Bishop's Stortford on 25 September 1892.

On the 1901 Census the family were living at Bartholomew Road, Bishop's Stortford, and his father was working as a labourer for the Urban District Council. On the 1911 Census he was living with his mother and siblings at 10 Middle Row, Bishop's Stortford and he was working as a Labourer in a nursery. His father was not at home.

Wartime Service

He originally enlisted into the 1st Hertfordshire Regiment 2067 but later transferred into the Gloucester Regiment. He died of wounds received in action.

He also served in the Gloucester Regiment under service no. 5935.

Additional Information

His mother Sarah received a war gratuity of £15 and pay owing of £10 11s 3d. Original documentation shows the correct initials of F W, but these were later changed to F C in red pen
