Bishop's Stortford Town Memorial

John Charles Payne was born in Bishop's Stortford on 21 November 1886 to John Charles and Mary Ann Payne and baptised on 26 January 1887 at Hockerill, Herts. 


In 1911 the family were living in Bishop's Stortford at 51 Castle Street and his occupation was malster's labourer.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Bishop's Stortford and served firstly in the Bedfordshire Regiment under service no. 27026, then transferred to the Northamptonshire Regiment.  He was missing presumed dead, killed in action, on 17 February 1917 and his body was not recovered for burial. 

Additional Information

His father John received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £2 17s 1d.


John is also commemorated on his parent's headstone in Bishop's Stortford Old Cemetery, his part of the inscription reads:

", , , AND THEIR SON JOHN CHARLES PAYNE KILLED IN ACTION 17TH FEBRUARY 1917 AGED 30 YEARS
REUNITED"
