Pre War

Francis Ernest/Ernest Francis Andrews was born in 1893 in London. He was known as Ernest and his mother was Annie Ellen Andrews (Moore).

His birthplace and true surname are uncertain but it is likely that his true surname is Moore and he was the son of Annie Ellen Moore. A baptism for Francis Ernest Moore with his mother named as Nellie Moore (no father listed) is recorded at St Mark's Church, Marylebone, London on 30 November 1893, with the birth at Queen Charlotte's Hospital on 28 November 1893.

Both Ernest and his mother are listed on the 1901 Census with his widowed grandmother Ann Elizabeth Moore. Ernest (listed as son) was then aged 7 and his mother Annie was working as a laundress. They were living at 65 George Street, Northchurch, Berkhamsted, Herts. They remained at the same address on the 1911 Census.  Ernest (then called Francis Ernest Moore) was aged 17,  listed as nephew and working as a golf caddie.  Head of the household was Ann Elizabeth Moore (N..B. her maiden surname was Andrews). His mother Annie Ellen Moore was listed as daughter to the head and working as a laundress.

On pension records his mother was living at 1 Field Terrace, Smith Street, Watford, Herts but later moved to 127 George Street, Great Berkhamsted.

Wartime Service

Ernest enlisted in Bedford and served with the 8th Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment.

He was killed in action on 27 June 1917, aged 23 and is buried in Philosophe British Cemetery, Mazingarbe, France.

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £5 10s. His pay was overdrawn by 6s 2d. She also received a pension of 3s 6d a week, later increased to five shillings a week.

N.B. Ernest Moore is listed on Sunnyside, Berkhamsted War Memorial as a soldier of the Bedfordshire Regiment.
