Pre War

Born in Bushey, Walter Ernest Andrews was the son of John and Mary Andrews. He was one of 6 children. The family moved to Bushey and settled at 15 High Street in the mid-1880s.


By 1911 John Andrews senior was 70 and his three daughters had left home, but his three sons were still living with him.  Like their father, all three were all employed as bricklayers.

Wartime Service

Walter Ernest Andrews enlisted in Bedford as Private 318568 with the Bedfordshire Regiment. He was killed on 27 July 1916 and is commemorated on Thiepval Memorial to the Missing (Pier and Face 2C), the Bushey memorial and on the plaques at St James, St Peters and at the Congregational Church.


His pension record shows that his parents were awarded 6/- per week with effect from 01/05/1917.


His older brother, John Edward Andrews, was also killed in action two months later on 25 September 1916 and is also commemorated at Thiepval.
