Pre War

Francis Thomas Angell was born in Hatfield, Herts, depending on the documents looked the 10th December 1896 or 10th February 1897, son of Henry William Angell (a Carter) (B 1867 in Hatfield) and Sarah Ann Angell (B 1856 in Peterborough). He was baptised in the Parish Church of Bishops Hatfield, Hatfield, Herts, on 23rd May 1897.

1901 Census records Francis aged 4, living with his parents, 4 brothers and 2 sisters at 18 Primrose Cottages, Hatfield, Herts. His father was a car man.

He attended Hatfield C of E School from September 1900 then transferring to Hatfield National School (later became St Audrey's School) leaving in March 1911 to start work.

1911 Census records Francis aged 14, at school, and living in a cottage Hatfield Park, Hatfield, Herts, with his parents, 3 brothers and sister Lilly 11.

Officially recorded living in Hatfield when he enlisted in Hertford.

Wartime Service

Francis enlisted in the County town of Hertford, initially posted to the 1st Battalion, Hertfordshire Regiment with the Service No. 6073, later transferred to the 6th Battalion, Princess of Wales’s (Royal Berkshire) Regiment with the Service No. 36230. 

He was Killed in Action on 30th September 1916, he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing, Somme, France.

Bishop’s Hatfield Parish Magazine of April 1916 recorded: “Angell, Francis T.,   The Park,   3/1st Herts. Regt”   Francis died only four months after being mobilised.   

Bishop’s Hatfield Parish Magazine of January 1917 recorded: “Killed in Action – Francis Angell."

Awarded the British War Medal, and Victory Medal.  

Additional Information

Francis is commemorated on family headstone in St Luke’s Churchyard, Hatfield.

His effects of £2-15s-1d, pay owing and £3, War Gratuity went to his father Henry W. Angell.

Hatfield Parish Council Souvenir Committee Ledger:, Mrs Angell (Mother) Hatfield Park, received an “In Memoriam and Roll of Honour Album”.
