Pre War

Joseph was born in 1887 in Bedmond, Abbots Langley to John Dimmock, a farm labourer, and Emma (nee Hall).

On the 1891 Census the family were living at Bottom House Cottage. By the 1901 Census the family had moved to Leavesden Green, (John Dimmock had died in early 1901) and Joseph was working as an errand boy. On the 1911 Census Joseph’s occupation was a printer on metal and he was lodging in Broughton, Cumbria. He later moved to Edinburgh and is recorded as making payments to a Print Union as a Lithographer.

Wartime Service

Joseph enlisted as Private 30392 in King’s Own Scottish Borders and was posted to 2nd Battalion which had been in France since 15 Aug 1915.

The 2nd Battalion were involved in the 3rd Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele). Following the action at Polygon Wood, the next British attack was planned for 4 Oct 1917 at Broodseinde. There was heavy rain which caused deep mud. However the attack went ahead but Joseph was killed in this action.
