Pre War

William John was born in Edmonton, London to Henry Charles, a printer’s stationary engine driver, and Harriet (nee Chandler ).


On the 1891 Census the family of Father, Mother, William, 2 sisters and brother, Henry were living at Chauncey Street, Edmonton. By the 1901 Census the family had moved to 14, Vicarage terrace, Victoria Road, Edmonton with a further brother Edward (born 1895). On the Census of 1911 William, a milk carrier, was living with his widowed mother and younger brother and sister at 1, Milverton Terrace, Totteridge Lane, Whetstone, Barnet. There was also a visitor Daisy Maud Wren. 


William married Daisy Maud Wren at the Registry Office in Barnet on 31 Jan 1912. There would be a son, William Charles, born 22 Nov 1916. His widow later lived at 1, Hopewell Cottages, Bells Hill, Barnet.

Wartime Service

 William attested in London on 18 Aug 1914 for 1 year service as a reservist with King’s Royal Rifle Corps and joined 8th Battalion as Private A335.


He was medically discharged on 5 Feb 1915. This was due to ‘having hammer toes on both feet, not suitable for long marches’. Later William was ‘deemed to have been posted’ on 24 Jun 1916 but attested on 21 Jul 1917 giving his address as 76 Dale View Road, Stamford Hill, Totteridge. He was called up on 31 Jul 1917 and posted as 90138 Air Mechanic III to Balloon Training Depot. He killed in an accident in Richmond Park on 21 Sep 1917, being carried aloft while testing a prototype barrage balloon system. He was buried in Bells Hill Burial ground, Barnet.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £1 10s and arrears of £2 2s 7d was paid to his Widow.
