Pre War

Born in Bushey in 1889, Percy James Ashby was the oldest son in a family of 8 children. His parents, George and Jane Ashby lived initially on Clay Hill but, as their family grew, they moved to 136 School Lane, Bushey. George Ashby was a farm labourer and his two oldest sons,  Percy and his brother, William, became domestic gardeners and they both served in the war.

Wartime Service

Percy enlisted in London and served as Lance Corporal 1208 in the 1st Battalion Middlesex Regiment. He died of wounds in France on 17 June 1917 and was buried in the Doullens Communal Cemetery in Picardie.

He is commemorated on the Bushey Memorial, at St James’ Parish Church and at the Congregational Church, Bushey High Street.

His pension record shows that his wife Jane, of 36 School Lane, Bushey was deceased and that the case was passed to "Depts." 17-5-18, the case having been opened from widow's letter 8-5-18.
