Pre War

Frank Richard was born Stoke Newington on 15 May 1877 to Rev. Edwin Bristow Penny and Fanny Ann Elizabeth (nee Franklin). Frank’s mother died in 1877 and on the 1881 Census Frank was living with his father, sisters Kate and Bessie, and brother, William at Kennington Green Road, Islington. On the 1891 Census Frank was living at Park Villas, Church Hill, Islington with his older sister Bessie and younger brother Edwin Harold.


Frank married Mabel King on 11 Dec 1900, Frank’s occupation was given as optician and they lived at 28 Compton Terrace, Station Road Enfield. On the 1901 Frank and Mabel were living at 38 Commercial Arcade, St Peter Port, Guernsey, Channel islands and Frank was working as an antique dealer, optician and photographer. On the 1911 Census Frank and Mabel were living at Marefield Park Road, New Barnet and his occupation was a clerk. 


Wartime Service

Frank was enlisted as Private 27189 Norfolk Regiment. No Service Record has been found. He would have been posted to 3rd (Reserve) Battalion for his training. While at Felixstowe during cold weather around Feb 1917 he complained of a chest infection.


Frank went to France in Jul 1917 (no Battalion has been found) and in Sep 1917 he was evacuated to UK suffering from Tuberculosis. He was treated at 2/1st Southern General Hospital, Birmingham (he gave his previous occupation as poultry farmer) and was later discharged to convalesce at Ampthill, Bedfordshire.


Frank was medically boarded at Barnet War Hospital on 12 Sep 1918 having been transferred to 433rd Agricultural Company, Labour Corps as Private 527789. Frank was recommended for discharge as medically unfit but died at Barnet War Hospital on 9 Oct 1918 having been diagnosed with Phthisis (a lung disease). 

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £8 and arrears of £12 13s 1d was paid to his widow. Elder Brother William Charles Penny served as Sergeant , 7th Buffs (East Kent) Regiment, Died of Wounds on 22 Nov 1916.
