William Pentecost was born on 27 September 1897, at 51, Park Road, Leytonstone, Essex, son of Alfred Pentecost, a Nurseryman, and Frances (Fanny) Pentecost (nee Helmore). The youngest son, one of nine children one died in infancy.


1901 Census records William aged 3, living with his parents, and six siblings in, Edgwarebury, Edgware, Middx.


By 1911 the family were living in Hertfordshire, the Census records William aged 9, at school, and living with his parents and four siblings at, Glenhaven Nurseries, Shenley Road, Borehamwood, Herts.

Wartime Service

William enlisted at Kilburn, Lon/Middx, on 18 October 1915, aged 19, his occupation was given as a Gardener, posted to the Royal Garrison Artillery with the service number 60359. Joining at the Royal Garrison Artillery Depot, at Dover, on 21 October 1915, posted to the 87th Siege Battery, on 1 December 1915.


He embarked with them at Southampton on 5 May 1916, for Rouen, France, arriving the following day, 6 May 1916. He was killed in action near Cambrai on 30 November 1917. His service record has a note on it saying, “He was buried at an unknown spot at Ribecourt British Cemetery, 61/4 miles, South West of Cambrai, where a Memorial bearing his name was erected”. 

Additional Information

His mother Frances received a dependents pension of 5/6 a week from 25 June 1918, her address was, The Nurseries, Borehamwood, Herts. His effects of £6-8s-10d, Pay Owing and War Gratuity of £9, went to his father Alfred Pentecost.
