Pre War

Alfred Ashwell was born in 1894 in Bishop's Stortford to Jeffery and Julia Ashwell. On the 1911 Census he was a schoolboy living with his family at 4 Half Acres, Bishop's Stortford.

Wartime Service

He enlisted and served from 30 July 1915 in the Kings Royal Rifle Corps under Reg No. R/9115 and TR 13/8435, eventually being promoted to 2nd Lt.

Additional Information

Probate was granted to his father Jeffery Ashwell, retired farmer, on 6 April 1918 with effects of £333 7s 1d. His father received a war gratuity of £10 10s and pay owing of £30 5s 7d. Brother to Jeffery Ashwell also named on the Methodist Church Memorial.
