Thomas Arthur Askew was born in Birkenhead, Cheshire on 11 Oct 1895 (baptised at St John’s, Birkenhead on 20 Nov 1895) to William Arthur Askew, boiler maker’s mate, and Louisa (nee Fenwick), the family were living at 1, Stafford Street, Birkenhead.
On the 1891 the family of parents, Herbert (born 1882), Emma (born 1886), Edith (born 1890) were still living at Stafford Street, Birkenhead.
On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Herbert (a rivet heater), Emma, William (born 1892), Thomas, George (born 1897), Percy (born 1899) and Elizabeth born 1901) were living at 57, Conisworth Road (poss Crimsworth Road), Lambeth, London.
Not found on the 1911 Census.
Thomas worked at Ewart's, his father was yard foreman at Ellis and Everard.
Wartime Service
Thomas enlisted in the Bedfordshire Regiment as Private 417386 in 1st Battalion, following his training he went to France in 1915 to join his Battalion in ’A’ Company.
He died on 30/01/1916, his CSM stated that his death occurred at 7am when he was shot by sniper (head wound) while in the trenches near Bray-sur-Somme.
Additional Information
War Gratuity of £5 10s and arrears of £3 6s 2d was paid to his father.
Brother Sgt William in RFA DCM promoted to SM - served in Mesopotamia. Five brothers in total in Army. Brother in Kings Royal Rifle Corps and a brother Chief Petty Officer in RNAS.
