Pre War

Son of Stanley James and Annie (nee BOWYER) ATTENBOROUGH of Watford.

His parents married 1882 in the Strand, London, district.  Annie died 1922 in Watford aged 65, and was buried 16 October in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; Stanley died 22 September 1949 in London aged 91.

John was born 11 January 1886 in Fulham, London, and baptised 7 April 1886 at St Andrew’s, West Kensington, London. He sailed on the Allen Line Turisian 1 June 1911 Liverpool to Quebec. He was buried in Lincoln Cemetery 21 May by his father who erected a memorial to his son.

He has an entry in the National Probate Calendar.

On the 1891 Census, aged 5 he lived in Clifton, Beds, in the household of his paternal grandfather. On the 1901 Census, a scholar aged 15, he was attending Aldenham School, Aldenham, Herts. On the 1911 Census, (recorded as James) a solicitor aged 26, he was a visitor in Broadstairs, Kent, with his parents and one sibling.

Wartime Service

He attested 19 September 1914 at Valcartier: a farmer, unmarried, 5’ 7¾” tall, C of E; his next-of-kin was given as his father of Watford. He died of gun shot wounds to the leg at 4 Northern General Hospital, Lincoln.
