Pre War

David Alfred Ayley was born in 12 September 1889 in High Laver, Nr Matching, Essex to Charles and Ann Ayley (Aley) and baptised on 12 October 1890 at St James, Upper Edmonton, Enfield, where the family were living on the 1891 Census. By 1911, they had moved to Brook Cottages, Nr Down Hall, Matching,  Essex and he was working as a Farm Labourer.  He married Hilda Smith in Bishop's Stortford in 1916.

Wartime Service

David Ayley served in France from May 1915. He died from pneumonia at the Military Hospital, Netley, Southampton, Hants. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (awarded to 'other ranks' for gallantry in the field)

Additional Information

His widow Hilda received a war gratuity of £18 and pay owing of £40 17s 12d.
