Pre War

Son of the late William and Isabella (nee BRYAN) TAYLOR.

His parents married 24 July 1883 at St Peter’s, Littleover, Derbys.  William died 1897 in the Derby district aged 47; Isabella died 1908 in the Watford district aged 56.

Charles was born 1886 in Derby, and baptised 1 September 1886 at St Michael’s, Derby.

On the 1891 Census, aged 4 he lived in Derby, with his parents and two siblings.  On the 1901 Census, a junior clerk at printworks aged 14, he still lived in Derby, with his widowed mother and two siblings.  On the 1911 Census, a clerk in printing aged 24, he was a boarder in Bushey, with one sibling.

Wartime Service

He attested for Short Service (3 years with the Colours) 1 September 1914 at St Paul’s Churchyard, London: a clerk aged 28, 6′ tall, C of E, of Bushey, Herts, in the King’s Royal Rifle Corps.  

He had previously served in the 1st Volunteer Battalion Derbyshire Regiment, discharged time expired 1908.  

He served as Rifleman 3467 7th Battalion Rifle Brigade at Home 1 September 1914 to 19 May 1915, and with the B.E.F. 20 May to 30 July 1915.  

He was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 20 May 1915, and was killed in action.

Additional Information

Brother of Mr. D. T. Taylor, of Egginton Rd., Hilton, Derby. Born St. Chad’s, Derby, resident Bushey, enlisted in St. Paul’s Churchyard, Middlesex.
