Harold Payne Philby was born 22 July 1887 to Howard Montague Philby and May Beatrice Duncan.


He was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant 19 Sep 1908 and Lieutenant 1 Apr 1910 in the Yorks and Lancaster Regiment. He was employed in the West African frontier force from 4 Oct 1911.


On the outbreak of war he returned to from Nigeria and joined 2nd Battalion.

Wartime Service

He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order on 3rd Sep 1915, the citation for which reads: "For conspicuous and consistent good service throughout the campaign , notably during fighting at Hooge on 9th August 1915 when with great coolness and energy he frequently visited all portions of the firing line under heavy shell Fire and personally supervised the dispatch of reinforcements, bombs, etc." He was also Mentioned in Dispatches on two occasions in 31st December 1915 and 13th June 1916.



Additional Information

His mother, Mrs. M. B. Philby, of "The Crossways," Camberley, Surrey. ordered his headstone inscription: "R.I.P." His younger brother Dennis Duncan Philby served with Royal Dublin Fusiliers from 1910 with service in India and B.E.F. before dying on while being attached to Royal Munster Fusiliers.
