Pre War

Richard Phillips was born in 1900 in Bishops Stortford to Richard and Emma Phillips.  On the 1911 Census he was living with his family at The Green, Birchanger, Bishops Stortford and was a schoolboy. His father was nurseryman labourer. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Saffron Walden, Essex and served with the 6th Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment.  He was killed in action in France.

Additional Information

His father Richard received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £9 6s 1d.

N.B. Birchanger is on the outskirts of Bishop's Stortford and is now in Essex.
