Pre War

William Carrington Pickering was born on 10th August 1897 and baptised on 6th March 1898 in Streatham, Surrey, to parents William Pickering and Marion (nee Carrington), he had three brothers Francis, Arthur and Robert. 


In 1901 aged three he was living in with his family in Streatham, his father was a Merchants Clerk.  William was educated at Bengeo School and at Haileybury College 1911-1914.

Wartime Service

Soon after the outbreak William volunteered and enlisted in the 19th Royal Fusiliers as Private 771, number changed to 777, then promoted to Lance Corporal.   

He went to France 14th November 1915.  After Officer Cadet training he was commissioned on 4th August 1916 as 2nd Lieut, 6th Bn Rifle Brigade, this was a reserve/training unit, he was then attached to 1st Bn.

They fought at the Somme in 1918 and then at Hazebrouke and Bethune. During the final advance in Picardy William was killed In Action on 11 Oct 1918.  He was buried in St Aubert Cemetery together with other Rifle Brigade casualties of the same day.

Additional Information

Probate records show he was from at St Minver Mount, Ephraim Lane, Streatham, Surrey, and he left £223-18s-8d to his father. Brothers: Francis Henry Carrington Pickering served with Honourable Artillery Company and as 2nd Lt 5th Northants. Arthur Carrington Pickering served as Capt.in 5th Northants – awarded Military Cross. Robert Napier Carrington Pickering enlisted in Honourable Artillery Company and served with them in France from Dec 1915, Mentioned in Despatches 1916. And was commissioned in 5th Northants.
