*1 It was reported that 'Jack' was not a "Kimpton lad" but was well know there as his mother was the daughter of Mrs Holmes of Park Lane, Kimpton and spent many holidays there

Wartime Service

He joined the army sometime in 1915 and had been in France for over two years when he was killed.

Additional Information

*2 John is also commemorated on the family headstone in Hoddesdon Cemetery. His part of the inscription reads:

IN PROUD AND LOVING MEMORY OF MY DEAR SON JOHN BAKER.
GRANDSON OF THE ABOVE [Daniel Holmes). KILLED IN ACTION FRANCE AUGUST 8TH 1918. AGED 20
