*1 Due to the frequency of the name and the absence of the reason for his association with Hitchin, it has not been possible to make a positive identification of him in the records of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission or in the Medal Rolls of the Public Record Office. He is not shown in ‘Soldiers died’ database as having been born, enlisting or residing in Hitchin.
Of the 164 ‘William Baker's’ in ‘Soldiers died’ database the most likely casualty was born and enlisted in Potton in Bedfordshire. He held the Regimental Number G/14509 in the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment and was killed in action on the 16th December 1916. He has no known grave and is remembered on Pier/Face 7C of the great Thiepval Memorial to the Missing on the Somme in France.
