Pre War

Edgar Rowland Baldwin was born 3 February 1893 in Bishop's Stortford, the son of Frederick and Annie Baldwin.


On the 1911 Census he was living with his mother Annie and brothers Harold and Phil at 23 Bartholomew Road, Bishop's Stortford and working as a Clerk at the Cooperative Society. (N.B. Father not at home, although mother listed as head of the household and married). He was baptised as an adult on 9 December 1914 at St John the Baptist, Devizes, Wilts. His address was given as 22 Avon Road and his occupation as manager.

Wartime Service

He enlisted at Devizes where he was living at the time and died during the Battle of Le Transloy (1 - 20 October 1916), which was the scene of very fierce fighting in 1916 during part of the Battle of the Somme.


He also served in the London Regiment under Reg. No. 6689.

Additional Information

His mother Annie received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £8 1s 2d.
