Pre War

John was born in Cottered, Herts, on 15 Mar 1889 the son of William Pinnock (born 1853 in Cottered, Herts) and Sarah Elizabeth (nee Pearman, born 1863 in Ardeley, Herts). John was baptised on the 19 May 1889, in the Parish Church Cottered, Herts.


He attended Cottered Church of England School. The 1891 Census records John aged two living with his parents, sister Annie (aged 8), brothers William (aged 6), James (aged 4) and George (aged 1 month), at 41 Cottered Street, Cottered, Herts. 1901 Census records John aged 12, living with his parents, Brothers William aged 16, (James aged 14), George (aged 10), sisters Sarah (aged 9), Ada ( aged 5) and Daisy (aged 3), in Cottered, Herts. By the 1911 Census John was working as a Farm Labourer, still living with his parents, and sister Daisy, aged 13, in Brookend, Cottered, Herts.

Wartime Service

John attested on the 2 Feb 1916 at Hitchin. He was called forward for service on the 4 Jan 1917. Originally John served as Sapper 223465 in the Royal Engineers and went through his initial training at RE Establishments. Being deployed from Dismounted Training Centre, Daganwy, he entered France on the 9 Sep 1917 and was immediately transferred to the 9th Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment (Pioneers) with the Service No 50107, joining this battalion in the field on the 12 Oct 1917.


He was admitted to the 48th Field Ambulance on the 12 May 1918 with ‘Gas shell wound’, and was transferred to the 29th Casualty Clearing Station later the same day. He died of his wounds on the 21 May 1918 at #5 General Hospital in Rouen.


He is buried in the CWGC St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France.

Additional Information

His effects of £19-2s-4d, of which £5-10s- was war gratuity went to his father William.
