Pre War

Son of the late Edwin and Mary (nee DOREY) BALLAM; husband of Blanche (nee COLE) BALLAM.

His parents married 24 January 1878 at St James’, Kingston, Dorset.  Mary died 1904 in the Blandford, Dorset, district aged 48, and was buried 23 June at St Mary’s, Winterbourne Stickland, Dorset; Edwin died 1914 in the Blandford district aged 64, and was buried 31 October at St Mary the Virgin, Charlton Marshall, Dorset.

Walter was born 1886 in Winterbourne Stickland, and married 1910 in the Watford district; they had three children.  Blanche never remarried, and died 1972 in the Bournemouth, Hants, district aged 83.

On the 1891 Census, aged 4 he lived in Stickland, with his parents and five siblings.  On the 1901 Census, a general labourer aged 14, he still lived in Stickland, with his parents and seven siblings.  On the 1911 Census, a builder’s labourer aged 24, he was a visitor in Watford, with his wife and one child.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Watford; was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and was killed in action.

Additional Information

Unfortunately, Walter’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
