Pre War

Thomas Pomfrett was born in Little Hallingbury, Essex, on 7th June 1893, son of John Pomfrett a, Shepheard and Martha Pomfrett (nee Brown). The eldest of six children.


He was Baptised at St Mary Magdalene, East Ham, Essex, on 30th July 1893.


1901 Census records Thomas aged 7, living with his parents, sisters Lilian (4) and Bertha (2) in, Wrights Green, Little Hallingbury, Essex. The family had a lodger Francis Thurley a, Thatcher.


1911 Census, Thomas (18) is working as a Cowman, living with his parents and five siblings at, 42A Crescent Road, Waltham Cross, Herts. 

Wartime Service

Thomas enlisted at Safron Waldon, Essex, on 21st December 1914, giving his age as 21, his occupation a Milkman, posted to the Royal Field Artillery with the service number 55159. Serving at home until 30th August 1915, when he was posted to the Western Front. He received a Gun Shot Wound (GSW) to his left thigh while in action at the Somme Front on 26th September 1916, admitted to No. 3 General Hospital, Rouen, France, returning to England for treatment on 9th October 1916. He was discharged physically unfit for war service on 23rd May 1917. Issued with the Silver War Badge No. 190888, on 1st June 1917.


Thomas died at home on 8th December 1918, he was buried at Cheshunt Burial Ground, Bury Green Road, Cheshunt, Herts on 13th December 1918.

Additional Information

His effects of £11, went to his mother Martha Pomfrett. She ordered his headstone inscription, while living at 23 Melbourne Road, Waltham Cross, which read: "FOR EVER IN OUR THOUGHTS HIS END WAS PEACE",
