Pre War

Francis Hastings Poncia was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, in 1894, the only child of Stanley Poncia, a Railway Clerk and Jennie Gwendoline Poncia (nee Hastings).


1901 Census records Francis aged 6, living with his parents at, 76, Burcot Road, Norton (Derby), Derbyshire.


1911 Census records Francis aged 16, employed as a Junior Clerk, living with his parents at, 8a, Montagu Road, Hendon, Middlesex.


Francis and his parents were living in Meersbrook, Borehamwood, Herts, at the time he enlisted.

Wartime Service

Francis enlisted at St Albans, Herts, initially posted to the Army Cyclist Corps (Home Defence) with the service number 11355, transferred to The Kings (Liverpool Regiment) with the service number 58067.


He was reported wounded and missing in action on 22 March 1918 and listed as Killed in Action on 30 March 1918.

Additional Information

His father, Mr. S. Poncia, Meersbrook, Boreham Wood, Herts., ordered his headstone inscription: "ONE OF GOD'S BEST BLESSED ARE THE PURE IN HEART". His mother Jennie Poncia received his effects of £20-16s-10d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £13.
